Coimbra (H) is found half way between Porto and Lisbon, inland and built on a hill above the river Mondego. Its home to one of the oldest universities in Europe, but it was the medieval capital of the country This mix creates a fascinating ambience; modern student city life and ancient past.
Modern Coimbra is an energetic city, boasting a large student population, vibrant cafes and outdoor living.
At the top of town lies the magnificent university complex, built on the grounds of a former palace. As you enter through the Ferrea gate, you are taken aback at the grandeur of the university space and its magnificent 16 -17th century buildings.
The best thing about Coimbra is just walking around the city, getting lost in the narrow roads and alleyways. We come across a few other historical buildings in the area, and enjoy the views across the city.
We say goodbye to another great little city and head toward our final stop, the capital of Portugal – Lisbon.
