We leave the Camino Espirituel and carry on walking down the coast to the historic city of Vigo, Iberian Spain’s westernmost city right on the Atlantic Ocean. It has a lovely port, an old section of the central city with typical Galician architecture, and a hilltop fortress built in the 17th century.
The walk down the coast is stunning, passing through the towns of Sabaris, Baiona, Villadesuso and finally A Guarda – our last stop in Spain.
We stay in the small town of Sabaris, just outside of Baiona and enjoy an extra day of rest. Our hotel Vasco de Gama is a perfect spot to wile away the time especially since its raining, and we spend our afternoon having drinks on the terrace complimented with cheese and homegrown grapes.
We walk into Baiona for a look around. Its a little town of just over 10,000 people and is where Christopher Columbus landed after discovering America. Not surprisingly, it has a nice historic centre, a castle and a pretty marina…like most of the cities and towns we have visited so far.
As we arrive at the very southern tip of the Atlantic part of Spain, we reach the town of A Guarda. Its very picturesque with its typical fishing village on the shore. We spend a night at a local albergue and have a great seafood dinner at one of the local restaurants.
We will definitely return to this part of Spain. It’s such a beautiful coast, with few tourists, lots of history and amazing food!
The next day we cross the river into Portugal and head down this last bit of coastline before meeting up with our friends in Porto.
